I hate you, ~love, Satan

August 20th, 2007 by JW

This is the message from the New Life Center in Cedar Grove, WV, a small community just outside of Charleston, the capitol of our humble little state.  Evidently, some folks are offended by the display, here’s the scoop from the Charleston Gazette:  Satan hates a Kanawha County church, and the church has a billboard that says so.

Now personally, I’m not offended by the message.  I would be honored for the Devil to count me and my congregation as an enemy, after all… the Devil is bad.  A radical message to put out?  Maybe, but Jesus was pretty radical with the messages He put out too.  So am I supporting this church?  Well, as a Christian who tries to live by the precepts of the New Testament, one of which says “Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities (Romans 13:1),” I feel obligated not to support this group’s advertisement.  You see as one who is asked by God to obey the laws laid down by the civil authorities of the day, I cannot support the New Life Center’s sign, due to this civil rule:

WV Code: §46A-6-102. Definitions (M) The act, use or employment by any person of any deception, fraud, false pretense, false promise or misrepresentation, or the concealment, suppression or omission of any material fact with intent that others rely upon such concealment, suppression or omission, in connection with the sale or advertisement of any goods or services…

So as a citizen of WV, I can’t support such false advertising tactics as this church is using ;)

Maybe I could buy the next billboard down the road and put something like this up:

Praying for the true enemies of Satan everywhere,

A Sign of the Times…

January 31st, 2007 by JW

There are an awful lot of churches out there these days whose signs need a bit of diciphering.  I find it a bit overwhelming.  If you were an ‘unchurched’ seeker, would you go into this church?

How would you decide which service to go to?  I understand the desire to make a church appealing to all, but does this dividing up into cliques help or hinder?  Read on –>

Women’s Day of Prayer

November 12th, 2006 by JW
I spotted this sign in the small town of Chesapeake, WV the other day:
People think that we are hardnosed for following the apostles’ teachings about women preaching in a public setting, but these people only even let the women in their church pray one day a year!   …talk to these folks about hardnosed…

From Tucker Memorial Baptist…

October 20th, 2006 by JW

“For all you do, His blood’s for you” reads the marquee at Tucker Memorial Baptist Church in Huntington, WV.  I’m sure Jesus is smiling down as they mingle his blood with the tagline of a BEER COMPANY!!!  The worst part is, they’ve got it wrong anyway. Romans 6:1,2 tells us, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?  Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”  Our goal should not be to see ‘what all we can do’ so that His blood can wash it away, Tucker Baptist, our goal should be to show Him enough gratitude for washing away our sins that we strive to ‘go and sin no more (john 8:11).’  Let’s hope your sign doesn’t land you in the position at judgement of hearing, “For all you do this boots for you.”

Cheshire Baptist Church presents…

October 19th, 2006 by JW
Cheshire Baptist Church Marquee/ taken by JWM
What can I really say about this?  …Notice the large smokestacks in the background behind the sign… maybe the people at this congregation have all been radiated… that MIGHT explain why anyone would think a ‘musical ventriloquist’ has any place in a house of WORSHIP…  Anybody else want to venture an explanation?  I’d love to hear from you!

(P.S. I emailed this picture to Wyn, prior to posting it here, his comment was, “Maybe he’s been reading Baptizing for dummies” {insert lots of pun filled chuckles here}  Thanks Wyn!)
