Listening to the radio, watching TV news, and browsing internet news sources lately has filled my head with the controversy over the USA Patriot Act. Basically this act gives the US government broad powers to gather information on suspected terrorists and their cohorts. The latest Patriot Act blow-out has come about due to the CIA wiretapping the phones of US citizens without obtaining a warrant through the court system. Under the Patriot Act, the President has the power to authorize these wiretaps during a time of war. Read the rest of this entry »

Hello from JW
December 22nd, 2005 by JWMy name is Justin Murdock. I am one of the teachers at the Garrett’s Creek Church of Christ. I, along with Wyn Baker (and possibly other brothers in the future) will be ‘blogging’ from time to time in order to offer a supplement to the articles and audio files on thegospelfortoday.com. The content will be more editorial in nature and will be used to show that:
- Preachers are real people with real lives and real concerns like everyone else.
- Preachers know what’s going on in the world and have opinions about it.
- Preachers have a sense of humor.
- There is more to being a Christian than knowing the doctrine and going to church.
Now, obviously, we will include scriptures and scriptural applications wherever possible and we will be aiming at some spiritural truth or concept in our discussions. There is also the possibility that Bro. Wyn, or future contributors to this blog may see a completely different purpose or goal for their participation in this blog… and that’s OK! Having different authors will also give you perspective on the Christian life from different points of view, so to end this first post I would like to give a little of my background so you may know where my perspective comes from.
I am 24 years old and as of today (12/22/05) have been married for 4 years. I have two babies under two! I have a 21 month old little boy and a 7 month old little girl. I grew up right here in West Virginia and plan to raise my own kids here as well. I work with my wife, my dad, my brother, my poppaw and my brother-in-law at a small family business. My mother is a school teacher. My parents are divorced and neither are members of the church of Christ. I have been a member of the church for about five years now. Growing up I attended a United Methodist church off and on but never really knew their beliefs and never really knew if I even believed in God! Fortunately, my then girlfriend-now wife talked me into attending a Gospel Meeting (revival) with her and after the week long meeting, I was definitely a believer and was baptized. I am still learning much and still growing as a Christian. My interests include Christian Apologetics (that is, those proofs that show that the Bible record still holds up against scientific scrutiny and new scientific theories), politics (not involvement in politics which I do not believe is a Christian’s place, just keeping up with political news), and anything to do with my kids.
