We do not negotiate!
January 19th, 2006 by JWHere is a clip from a news story I read today concerning the newly aired Bin Laden tape:
The White House said on Thursday that the United States “does not negotiate with terrorists,” responding to questions about a reported audio tape by Osama bin Laden that warned al Qaeda was preparing new attacks but was open to a conditional truce with Americans. (You can find the full story HERE)
Now as you might expect, this has got me to thinking about some things. Where do negotiations come into play as Christians, and when do we say, “We do not negotiate!”? Read the rest of this entry »

Having a “Crumby” day?
January 18th, 2006 by JWMost of us do not think much of crumbs. We let them pile up in the bottom of the toaster. We hide them under rugs, fridges, ovens and anywhere else a crumb can hide. We dump them in the trash when they’re on our plates, we brush them off when spotted on our clothes, we smile when we spot one stuck on someone’s face. But we definitely don’t go seeking them out as a food source or for any other reason, other than perhaps to sweep them up and discard them. Sadly, the poor and down-trodden crumbs are so denegrated in our lives that we even lay the burden on them when something has fallen short of our expectations. (i.e. “I had a crummy day” “That is a crummy car” “What a crummy movie” etc.) Read the rest of this entry »

I Doubt It
January 13th, 2006 by JWThere’s a card game I like to play (or at least I did like to play it before I had kids and had time for such things :) called, “I doubt it.” It is also known by more vulgar names, but for us Christians its called ‘I doubt it’. The basic premise is calling your opponents’ bluff or doubting their claims. In this case, doubt was a source of fun among friends. Read the rest of this entry »

How Convenient!
January 8th, 2006 by JWHow often have you made such a statement as the title of this entry? We all use phrases like this, and normally in a positive manner. Marketing companies have long since figured out that we are a society that loves convenience. We see the word “convenient” stamped on all sorts of products these days to make things look more appealing to us. For example, how many food items have you bought lately that have a “convenient resealable package”? Such a small thing, yet it is indeed convenient and many of us may pay a few cents more for the “conveniently” packaged product instead of one that (if you can even imagine) you may have to place into a zip-loc bag on your own. You can probably think of some things that you’ve purchased lately that you bought precisely for its convenience factor. I recently spotted (at my local Wal-mart…where else?) a tried-and-true piece of Americana that has recently undergone a transformation to make it more convenient, and let me tell you, this is going to be a real time-saving; productivity-increasing upgrade for me. The product? Read the rest of this entry »

Deep Thoughts
January 4th, 2006 by JWI had the pleasure of taking my family to the new aquarium in Atlanta, GA this past Monday (1/1/06). This aquarium is home to an enormous, football-field-sized, 6,200,000 gallon tank containing over 80,000 specimens of sea life. You can walk through an acrylic tunnel, deep beneath all of that water and watch flocks of stingrays soar overhead… giant grouper loping alongside… hammerhead sharks searching the deep… and then, from the depths of the teeming waters, a shadow appears… as you watch, the shadow forms into a beautiful and graceful giant of a fish gliding towards you, then over your head, and then back into the depths! Truly a wonder to behold. Read the rest of this entry »
