One of my all time favorite TV characters is definitely Barney Fife. Hollie and I have bought the first few seasons of the Andy Griffith show on DVD and I just don’t get tired of these classics. I wish that TV would go back to having some good, clean, yet still hilarious programs like Andy and Barney were able to create so easily. I guess there aren’t many of us who wouldn’t cherish living in a place like Mayberry with no crime to speak of and where all problems and disputes could be neatly wound up in a tidy 30 minute package. Bravo, Don Knotts, for giving us all some good clean laughs and there will be more coming from me and mine for many years to come.

How heartbreaking to see someone’s dreams fall out from under them. We can so easily empathize when we see things like this happen. Again, I look to the Olympics where a huge favorite for US gold in speed skating, Apolo Ohno, quite literally fell out of the competition today. This was shortly after another well known US Olympian, Michelle Kwan, fell out of competition this morning after a fall during practice yesterday. We all know how it feels to fail. Was it a bad decision that doomed us, as it was with Apolo? Was it a past injury, as it was with Michelle? Whatever the case may be, we know about falling… but do we know how to get back up?

I must confess that I am a closet Olympiholic. I just love to watch the Olympics wether its cross country skiing, the luge, or curling. Is it the competition? Is it the athleticism? Is it the amazing stories that many of the Olympians have come through to get to Torino? After the regular olympic games over the next two weeks there will be the ‘Paralympics.’ Even moreso than in the games taking place now, this will be a competition where we will see folks determined to ’stay the course,’ and I can certainly be inspired by the determination of all these athletes. Determination is definitely an admirable trait wether in the Olympian or in the Christian.
