Let no man despise thy youth…

October 29th, 2006 by JW

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed or Via e-mail. Thanks for visiting!

Being a relatively young man myself (25) and being a relative newcomer to the Lord’s Church as well (5 years), I am always excited to see young men of my generation striving to preach the gospel.  I had such an experience this weekend.  On Friday and Saturday night, my wife an I travelled to Saint Albans, WV where we had the pleasure of hearing Brother Clint DeFrance preach two excellent sermons.  Clint is just 19 but he is a very accomplished and powerful speaker already.  We’ll being seeing more from this brother in the future and all who have the opportunity will be blessed and edified to hear him preach the truth in a clear cut and straightforward way.

Favorite Clint quote of the weekend:  “Modern Morality is just the same old immorality with a new name.”

Headline: Stop mailing fake grenades, Canadians told

October 24th, 2006 by JW
grenadeDoes anyone see anything wrong with this headline?  It makes me think of the old saying about ‘not seeing the forest for the trees.’  It seems like the emphasis should be on not mailing ANY grenades instead of focusing on the fake ones!  It seems that we sometimes fall into this trap as Christians too.  While it is important to follow Christ in particulars, we need to stop and assess whether we are still following the major precepts as well. (see Matthew 23:23)

I’ve heard this problem referred to as, “majoring in minors.”  We all have a tendency to do this, we get dragged down with the mundane details of our jobs, of cleaning the kitchen, changing diapers, walking the dog, going to the gym, etc.  Sometimes we start focusing on these small details until we are on the brink of insanity.  It is not until we step back and see the big picture of WHY we work (to support our family), why we clean and change diapers (to keep a happy and healthy home and family), why we go to the gym (to stick around awhile longer)… that we see that these details are necessary if we want to meet our major goals.

So as we strive to keep a proper pattern of worship, strive to preach by a ‘thus saith the Lord’, strive to go through our day without cussing, drinking, knocking someone out, running over someone in a fit of road rage, etc…  Let us take a few moments EVERY day to step back and remember the MAJOR reasons for doing these minor things, and then take time to thank God for every reason we can think of.

Running life’s race…and falling on your face.

October 23rd, 2006 by JW
Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain it. And everyone who competes for the prize is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown.  Therefore I run thus: not with uncertainty. Thus I fight: not as one who beats the air. But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. (1 Corinthians 9:24-27)

Amen Paul, I love this exhortation comparing our faith to a race.  Its kind of like a mini pep talk for they weary Christian.  I have to wonder if anything like THIS ever happened to Paul as he ran his own race?

I know I’ve been there and boy does it ever hurt… but come on folks, the wonderful fact is that HE STILL WON THE RACE!  The big-’ol-moral of this lil’ ‘ol post:

Don’t let the force of gravity or the forces of evil keep you down!

A great depression for conservatism?

October 22nd, 2006 by JW
I hope I’m wrong about this, but I am greatly fearing for the church.  This fear has set in suddenly, but has managed to take quite a grip.  I searched for some church of Christ blogs and the great majority of them are simply diatribes about how we need to change all our beliefs in order to keep up with ‘emerging society.’  I am a part of society AND a part of the church, why have I not seen this great need to merge with society?  What is with this great surge of liberalism and a seeming vacuum of conservatism?  Read on –>

Blog and Mablog revisited

October 21st, 2006 by JW
So as I was perusing one of the web’s most excellent sites, Wikipedia, I began looking over the entry on the Church of Christ.  It had been updated and revised since last I looked and I was finding it a captivating read to see what others looking in have to say about my beloved church.  I was cruising along when something struck me…  a new schism?  How?  Who?  When?… The most frightening part is that this emergent church is emerging in my back yard and my ‘dread warning’ about Blog and Mablog deceiving the saints of God a few posts back may have been more on target than even I expected…  Read on  –>

From Tucker Memorial Baptist…

October 20th, 2006 by JW

“For all you do, His blood’s for you” reads the marquee at Tucker Memorial Baptist Church in Huntington, WV.  I’m sure Jesus is smiling down as they mingle his blood with the tagline of a BEER COMPANY!!!  The worst part is, they’ve got it wrong anyway. Romans 6:1,2 tells us, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound?  Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”  Our goal should not be to see ‘what all we can do’ so that His blood can wash it away, Tucker Baptist, our goal should be to show Him enough gratitude for washing away our sins that we strive to ‘go and sin no more (john 8:11).’  Let’s hope your sign doesn’t land you in the position at judgement of hearing, “For all you do this boots for you.”

‘Spot’ on evagelism

October 19th, 2006 by JW
The memory spotI ’spotted’ a story about a new bit of technology in the works by the folks at HP that gave my tech-geek side and my preacher side a few ideas.  Smaller than a grain of rice and capable of holding more data than a CD, this exciting technology has given lots of folk lots of ideas. You could adapt it for storing medical records in patient ID bracelets {Yawn}, you could create photos that talk {sigh}, security cards with voice recognition… BOOOORING.  I’ve got a better idea.  Read on!

Cheshire Baptist Church presents…

October 19th, 2006 by JW
Cheshire Baptist Church Marquee/ taken by JWM
What can I really say about this?  …Notice the large smokestacks in the background behind the sign… maybe the people at this congregation have all been radiated… that MIGHT explain why anyone would think a ‘musical ventriloquist’ has any place in a house of WORSHIP…  Anybody else want to venture an explanation?  I’d love to hear from you!

(P.S. I emailed this picture to Wyn, prior to posting it here, his comment was, “Maybe he’s been reading Baptizing for dummies” {insert lots of pun filled chuckles here}  Thanks Wyn!)

What do you want on your tombstone?

October 16th, 2006 by JW
AP ImageWhatever happened to those great pizza commercials anyway… but that’s beside the point.  The Veteran’s Administration (VA) is in hot water over the slow processing of a petition aimed at getting recognition for the wiccan symbol (a five-pointed star within a circle) to be placed on the tombstones of veterans.  The VA already recognizes some 38 symbols of faith and some very obscure and weird ones at that.  Personally, I say they ought to approve the petition before they end up in a deadlock with a warlock.
