Proof that God is not sexist, just practical

November 28th, 2006 by JW
I found the following headline and story of interest:

Many have taken offense to such passages as 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 and 1 Timothy 2:11-12.  They find them to be sexist and unfair.  But now I believe we can say unequivocally, armed with the above study, that God simply had our best interests in mind.  We all know how verbose some of us (present company excluded, of course) can be in the pulpit, now multiply that by three!!!  God designed the human posterior and simply knew we wouldn’t be able to bear it.

Thanking God for His practicality and wisdom, proven oft o’er and o’er

News from HOT SPRINGS, AK: Outdoor Ice Rink Melts

November 26th, 2006 by JW
The above headline made me chuckle.  Here is the story in all its obvious detail:

Skating rinks melt under Arkansas sun

We all have a tendency to miss details that are this obvious.  We miss evangelistic opportunities that are right in front of our faces.  We overlook problems that our brethren are having, when we should have been moving to help them months ago.  We overlook possible converts due to our own notions of who is ‘convertable’…  Are these harmless oversights, or are we skating on thin ice?  Read On –>

More proof that God has a sense of humor…

November 23rd, 2006 by JW

In my humble opinion, the built in ability for us to make complete and total fools of ourselves at the exact moment when the most people possible are able to witness it, is once again proof that God has a sense of humor.

I feel for you Mr. Cosmonaut, but at least you hooked it, Id’ve missed completely and sent a gold plated driver into orbit.

Thanking God for slap-stick (among other more important things…)

So Long and Thanks for All the Fish…

November 22nd, 2006 by JW
This was the last message that the dolphins (the second most intellegent life forms on the planet, with humans coming in third…) in Douglas Adams classic sci-fi book (and one of my all time favs) The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, attempted to communicate to mankind.  Unfortunately the message was misinterpreted as a very fancy set of backward somersaults (or something along those lines).  The dolphins knew of the impending destruction of Earth in order to make way for a new intergalactic hyperspace highway and took off for another planet shortly before the construction crews arrived.  What was their final farewell as they left the humans behind to explode?  …thanks for all the fish…

To an (outspoken) athiest author like Adams, I’m sure this was pure comedy without a twinge of bittersweetness.  However for me to think about such an absurd situation as the Dolphins ascending into space in search of a safehaven… it soon brings to mind a situation of the not-so-absurd variety.   Read on –>

The Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves

November 21st, 2006 by JW
The beatings will continueThis statement is meant to be funny by the fact that it is very counter-intuitive.  Most comedy is only funny because it has its roots in truth.  The truth is, many of us take this attitude.  We beat ourselves up for our shortcomings instead of realizing that trying and failing always trumps failing to try.  We often focus on the shortcomings of others as well.  Many times our preaching is focused on shortcomings as well and we preach the ‘negatives’ with many a rebuke and warning.

A Pulpiteers Props or a Heretic’s Horns?

November 20th, 2006 by JW
Old ways die hard.  So it is with those of us, who even though may still be youthful in our own right, refuse to let die the old ways and old paths once walked by the faithful and revealed to us by the word of God.  And so it is with the flip side of the coin as well.  It seems that those who would be false prophets today are acting on the same playbook of the false prophets of old….

[excerpt from part of an ancient scroll once used by the prophets of Baal and later the prophets of Ahab… Crudely translated into old English by the last scholar to have studied the scroll sometime in the 17th century…

…And beholdeth thou prophets of falsehood, if all else faileth thee, thou must findeth thee an certain prop with which to beholden thou listeners to thy cunning fables in great wonderment and consternation for if thine words doth cease to astonie the throngs, of a surety thine visual aid shall worketh in thine stead…   (Seed for thou Spurious Soothsayers, four score methods for building thy reportoire of false prophecies, Scroll I, Article A, Section Cii)

end excerpt, our acknowledgements to the private imaginary library of Mr. J. W. Murdock]

Readeth thou onward dearest readers, and behold the consistency of the sensationalist pulpiteers of today with the false prophets of yesteryear….eth… –>

Is Sarcasm a Sin?

November 17th, 2006 by JW

I certainly hope not, if it is, then I’m a sinner right along with the apostle Paul.  The apostle often used sarcasm in his rebukes.  Did this mean he didn’t love his brethren?  I think an examination of 1 Corinthians 13 will reveal that the apostle certainly understands what love is about.  Yet even in his lead-in to this ‘love chapter’ we can see an example of Paul’s sarcasm shining through.  Read on –>

Women’s Day of Prayer

November 12th, 2006 by JW
I spotted this sign in the small town of Chesapeake, WV the other day:
People think that we are hardnosed for following the apostles’ teachings about women preaching in a public setting, but these people only even let the women in their church pray one day a year!   …talk to these folks about hardnosed…
